Sympathy

I awoke, smiling, thinking of you,
I dreamt I made you laugh.
I'd told you something funny
A joke about something daft.

As I looked into your smiling eyes
And saw what was hidden there,
I had a pang, and my heart ached
In sympathy at what you bear.

I try to help to ease your load,
But it seems that what I do.
Can only lift the smallest burden
Across to me from you.

In the dream, we were very happy
Even though we knew,
This was not real, but fantasy,
And not a dream come true.

I made you forget your life's worries,
Deep inside my mind.
You were happy there, as I was too,
You said I was of your kind.

I wished it could go on, never waking up,
But too late I knew it wouldn't
The alarm went off I jerked awake.
And to get up, I knew I couldn't

Just a little longer, to lie quietly here,
And remember my dream with you.
I will get up soon, and go my way,
But I'd rather stay with you.

Even if your not really here
But just inside my thought.
I want you to know, that I think of you,
And all the joy you've brought.

Your special to me, my American friend,
You flutter like a dove
Here and there, within my dreams,
I'll catch you yet, my love!
